The Wagemaker family holds a prominent and respected position in Grand Rapids, Michigan, both historically and in contemporary times. Initially, the Wagemaker Company focused producing various types of work furniture. Additionally, marketed Wagemaker Reds, chicks noted for their ability to mature into cost-effective, profitable layers within five to six months. In 1932, the company ventured into manufacturing Wolverine boats. cedar strip boats, first promoted nationally in 1933, gained widespread popularity. During World War II, the company sold its technology to the U.S. Government for PT boat hulls between 1942 and 1945, dedicating its operations exclusively to war production rather than civilian pleasure boats. In 1947, Wolverine introduced its first molded plywood boat, leveraging wartime technological advancements. By 1955, Wagemaker had heavily invested in the molded plywood market. However, after the sale of Wagemaker Company, Inc. in 1960, Wolverine its market shares briefly but transitioned to fiberglass too late. Economic downturns and an oversaturated market ultimately overwhelmed the company, which had relied on the wooden boat industry for its success.
The Wagemaker company manufactured cost-effective boats, including Flat-Bottomed Rowing Skiffs, which gained popularity among local residents. The company expanded its selection of outboard hulls and also introduced small sailboats as well as a model powered by a mini-inboard engine.
